Churchill Brothers down HAL
April 14, 2003 23:08 IST
Ghanian striker Yusif Yakubu scored a fine brace of goals as Churchill Brothers, Goa, outwitted Hindustan Aeronautics Sports Club 2-1 in an Oil PSU National Football League match in Bangalore on Monday.
Yakubu, who had scored 15 of the 25 goals his team has scored going into this encounter, came out with a superb solo effort in the 30th minute to restore parity after the aircraftmen had drawn the first blood.
Working his way with a classy display, Yakubu hoodwinked goalkeeper Mark Mascarenhas, who had advanced, to score his first goal.
The top-scorer in the last NFL, he scored the match-winner in the 37th minute with a gem of a goal off a Benjamin Hamza pass.
Much to the delight of the local fans, it was HAL, who are sure to be relegated, forged ahead in the 25th minute as Isfaq Ahamed scored, taking advantage of Sunil's beautiful cross from the left.
But their joy was short-lived as the Goans immediately closed ranks and hit back.
HAL remain on eight points from 20 outings. Churchill Brothers, last year's runners-up, now have 31 points from 20 games.
