Yakubu gives Churchill victory
April 10, 2003 19:45 IST
A second-half goal by mercurial Ghanaian striker Yakubu Yusif was enough for Churchill Brothers to get better of Tollygunge Agragami (Kolkata) 1-0 in their 19th round OIL PSU-National Football League match at the Nehru stadium in Fatorda, Goa, on Thursday.
The all-important goal came in the 66th minute.
The goal was the result of fine cross from Noel Wilson to Yakubu, who chested the ball and then dodged past a rival defender before making a deft placement to the far corner of the net.
With this win, Churchill moved to sixth place with 28 points, below league leader East Bengal, who have 43 points, followed by Vasco, with 37, Salgaocar, with 35, JCT, with 34, and Mohan Bagan, with 29 points.
Tollygunge remain in ninth place, with 22 points, below Mahindra United and Dempo, who have 26 points each.
Churchill's defender Mahesh Gawali was adjudged the man of the match.
