Academic programmes at Chitra Tirunal Institute

The Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvanathapuram, invites applications for admission to the following academic programmes:
1. PhD: PhD Programme is available in the fields of Biochemistry, Biomaterials, Biomedical Engineering/Instrumentation, Cellular Molecular Cardiology, Chronic Disease Epidemiology, Health Economics, Health Policy Analysis, Gender Issues in Health, Implant Biology, Medical Anthropology, Health System Research, Neurobiology, Neurology, Pathology, Polymer Sciences, Radiology and Thrombosis Research.
2. DM/MCh (Three years) DM Cardiothoracic; Vascular Anaesthesia, DM Neuroanaesthesia, DM Cardiology, DM Neurology, DM Neuroradiology, M Ch Cardiovascular; Thoracic Surgery, MCh Neurosurgery, MCh Neurosurgery. (Five years)
3. Post Doctoral Certificate Courses (One year): Cardiovascular; Neurosurgical Anaesthesiology, Neuro; Vascular Radiology, Vascular Surgery
4. Master of Public Health (Two years)
5. Master of Applied Epidemiology (Two years): An off-campus course conducted at the National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai.
6. Post DM/MCh Fellowship
Post Doctoral Fellowships in the departments of Cardiology, Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery, Neurology and Neurosurgery (1 position each of 1 year duration)
7. Post Doctoral Fellowship in Biomedical Technology (Two positions of 1 year duration)
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION FOR ENTRY:
PhD: Candidates with Post Graduate Degree in Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry/Biotechnology/Physiology/Zoology or any other branches of life sciences excluding plant sciences, MTech in Polymer Technology/Material Science/Biomedical Engineering/Instrumentation or Post Graduate Degree in Public Health, Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Veterinary Sciences, Social Sciences or Statistics with at least 60% marks can apply. Selection will be on the basis of performance in a Written test/Interview.
Those who have passed the UGC CSIR National Eligibility Test or hold individual fellowship can directly appear for the interview. In the disciplines of Pharmacy and Engineering, only GATE qualified candidates with percentile score of 85 and above is considered.
DM: Cardiology; Neurology: MD in General Medicine or Paediatrics or equivalent qualification. Candidates with MD in Psychiatry with a minimum of six months residency posting in General Medicine and Neurology during the said course can also apply for DM Neurology. One seat in DM Cardiology is reserved for candidates with MD Paediatrics or equivalent qualification.
DM Neuroradiology: MD or equivalent qualification in Radiology/ Radiodiagnosis.
DM Anaesthesia: MD or equivalent qualification in Anaesthesia
MCh Courses: MS in General Surgery or equivalent qualification for 3-year courses and MBBS with one year Post-registration Senior Residency/House Surgeoncy in General Surgery from a University/PG institute/Teaching Hospital recognized by the Institute, for 5 year course in Neurosurgery.
Post Doctoral Certificate Courses: MD in Anaesthesiology/Diagnostic Radiology,
MS in General Surgery or equivalent qualification.
Master of Public Health: Medical graduates (after MBBS), Dental graduates, graduates in Veterinary sciences, Nursing sciences or students with a postgraduate degree in Social sciences, Nutrition or allied specialties will be considered for selection. Prospective candidates will be evaluated on the basis of educational qualifications, professional experience relevant to the field of health, a brief write up to be submitted by them and interview.
Master of Applied Epidemiology: a. MBBS degree recognized by the Medical Council of India. b. Working in State or Central Government preferably Public Health Department or in Medical Institutions, Sponsored on deputation for two years on a full time basis to NIE. c. Three years experience in public health/surveillance activities after MBBS will be desirable qualification.
Post DM/MCh Fellowship: DM/MCh (3 year) or equivalent qualification. Those who will qualify by December 31, 2003 may also apply.
Post Doctoral Fellowship in Biomedical technology: Medical or Dental post graduates

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION FOR ENTRY:
Certificate Course in Nursing:
a. GNM or BSc in Nursing
b. For GNM candidates, one year experience as a bed-side nurse after passing the course as on January 1, 2004.
c. Professionally registered as a nurse by any recognised State Nursing Council in India or by Nursing Boards approved by the Indian Nursing Council.
Diploma in Blood Banking Technology:
BSc with Zoology or Physiology as major or ancillary subject and having an aggregate of at least 60% marks for these subjects.
Diploma in Cardiac Laboratory Technology; Diploma in Neuro Technology:
BSc with Physics as major or ancillary subject and having an aggregate of at least 60% marks.
Diploma in Operation Theatre Technology:
Diploma in Electronics, Biomedical Engineering or Instrumentation
Diploma in Advanced Medical Imaging Technology:
Certificate in Radiographic Assistance or equivalent qualification.
Diploma in Medical Records Science:
BSc with Botany/Zoology/Statistics as major subject and having an aggregate of at least 60% marks.
Diploma in Clinical Perfusion:
BSc in any of the Biological Sciences and having an aggregate of at least 60% marks
Note: Reservation of seats for SC/ST is as per Government of India norms. Candidates belonging to SC/ST and are applying for Diploma/Certificate courses are required to secure only 50% in the qualifying examinations.
General Information:
Upper age limit as on January 1, 2004 is 35 years for PhD, DM/MCh, PDCC Courses and Nursing Courses and 25 years for Diploma courses, relax able by 5 years for ex-service personnel with a service of not less than 5 years, SC/ST and sponsored candidates. Two candidates can be admitted as sponsored, in addition to the usual number of seats, for each course, if sponsored by Government/Governmental agencies or Universities.
Candidates with more than two failures in the University or equivalent examinations are not eligible for admission. Admission will be based on the previous academic record of the candidates and their performance in the selection tests to be held in the Institute during November 2003. Selection interview for Master of Applied Epidemiology course will be held in Chennai.
Those selected, excepting MPH and MAE scholars, will be paid stipend as fixed by the Institute. In the case of MPH scholars, a tuition fee of Rs 50,000 will be charged for the entire course. All scholars except students of off-campus course will be provided with accommodation as per Institute's rules.
Prescribed forms for Application and Prospectus can be obtained by a written request accompanied by a bank draft for Rs 600 drawn in favour of SCTIMST, Thiruvanathapuram in case of Doctoral, MPH and MAE Programmes and a bank draft for Rs 250 for other programmes. The request should contain the name and address of the candidate, course to which admission is sought and details of the demand draft. Application forms are NON-TRANSFERABLE.
