Change Kerala leadership by Nov 25: Karunakaran
November 19, 2003 21:36 IST
Senior Congress leader, K Karunakaran, on Wednesday set November 25 as deadline for the party high command to effect a change of leadership in Kerala.
Addressing a large gathering of his supporters in Kochi, he said if the party failed to act against his rival, Chief Minister A K Antony, before November 25, he will pull the government down.
Ruling out a compromise, he said: "We will make the chief minister resign. There is no compromise on that."
Karunakaran said his supporters cannot be taken lightly any more. "Attempts to trample us will not be permitted," he said drawing from the crowd roars of support.
The problems plaguing the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee can be solved in a minute by Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Antony, he said. Karunakaran said though aged, he still had the energy and the will power to bring down Antony. "Wherever we go, the tri-colour flag of the party will be ours," he said. KPCC president and Karunakaran's son, K Muraleedharan, lashed out at the Antony government, describing its two-and-half-year rule as a "bus with punctured tyres."
Earlier in the day, Karunakaran's supporters took out a massive rally from the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium to the venue of the rally.
Besides Electricity Minister Kadavoor Sivadasan and Health Minister P Sankaran, 21 MLAs close to Karunakaran attended the meeting.
Karunakaran's daughter and Kerala Tourism Development Corporation chairperson, Padmaja Venugopal, was also present.
