PM to expand Cabinet; Abdullah may get in

January 24, 2003 19:56 IST

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee will expand his Cabinet in the first week of February, Bharatiya Janata Party sources said in New Delhi on Friday.

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah is likely to be inducted and Health and Family Welfare Minister Shatrughan Sinha possibly allotted another portfolio.

The exercise will be carried out after consultations with Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani and party president M Venkaiah Naidu.

Minister of State Vasundhara Raje is likely to step down from office and undertake party work in Rajasthan, where she is president of the state unit.

Another minister of state who is expected to demit office is Raman Singh, who has been appointed president of Chhattisgarh BJP.

Coal Minister Uma Bharati is likely to continue in office till the assembly election in Madhya Pradesh.

One of the three BJP general secretaries -- Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Rajnath Singh and Arun Jaitley -- is likely to join the Cabinet.
