Sonia appoints 2 deputy CMs in Rajasthan
January 24, 2003 22:48 IST
The Congress high command, under pressure to remove Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot in the wake of the party's debacle in the assembly by-polls, on Friday appeared to give him a reprieve by appointing two deputy chief ministers and a Cabinet minister.
A coordination committee headed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi's political secretary Ambika Soni was also constituted to help the state government ahead of the assembly polls later this year.
Revenue and Irrigation Minister Kamla Beniwal, a member of the influential Jat community and Transport Minister Banwarilal Bairva, a Scheduled Caste, were made deputy chief ministers and Ramsingh Bishnoi was made a cabinet minister.
There had also been demand for removal of state PCC president Girija Vyas, but a group of senior party leaders, detractors of Gehlot, had opposed the plan.
On Thursday the All India Congress committee had given indication that Gandhi would take decision in a day or two on government and organisational changes in the state.
