In 1957 he became a parliamentarian. His powerful speeches, laced with wit and humour, made him a cynosure of the opposition, while earning him the respect of the treasury benches.
Once while introducing him to a visiting British prime minister, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru said, "He is a young leader of opposition who is always criticising me. But I see in him a great future."
