The young Atal vowed to remain a bachelor and devote his life to India. Always interested in social activities, he developed into a fiery orator. He had also participated in the freedom struggle and spent 24 days in jail.
While in Gwalior he attended a satsang organised by the Arya Samaj, which influenced him deeply. Soon he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. As a swayamsewak he was busy organising camps and lectures, writing poems, and delivering inspiring speeches.
His literary skills were soon put to better use by the RSS when he was asked to be the editor of the monthly Rashtra Dharma. Later, he was also made the editor of the weekly Panchjanya and the daily Swadesh.
During his days at Vir Arjun newspaper in Delhi, he was asked by the RSS to join Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee to form the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which was founded in 1951.
