NHRC chief declines comment on BJP's criticism

August 04, 2003 14:20 IST

National Human Rights Commission chairman Justice A S Anand on Monday declined to comment on the Bharatiya Janata Party's criticism of the NHRC's move to seek a retrial in the Best Bakery and four other Gujarat riots case.

"No comments," said Justice Anand when asked about BJP's statement describing the NHRC's move as unprecedented and dangerous for the country's federal structure.

Some BJP leaders have even described the NHRC as pro-Muslim.

Justice Anand was in Bangalore to inaugurate a five-day training programme for university teachers in human rights education. The training programme has been organised jointly the Bangalore University and the South India Cell for Human Rights Education and Monitoring.
