The National Human Rights Commission team, which was on a day-long visit to Vadodara on Tuesday to examine documents pertaining to the Best Bakery case, said it would present its report to the Commission within a week.

Twelve people were burnt alive in the bakery and two went missing on March 1, 2002 during post-Godhra communal violence.

The acquittal of the accused has generated a lot of heat with NHRC chairman A S Anand terming it as 'miscarriage of justice' even as the key witness Zaheera Sheikh, who had turned hostile during the trial, urged for re-opening of the case in a higher court outside Gujarat.

"We had come to Vadodara to collect police and court records related to the Best Bakery case," team leader Bhari Hoake told newspersons, winding up the team's one-day visit.

However, he refused to comment on whether the NHRC would recommend re-opening of the case, in which 21 accused were acquitted due to lack of evidence and witnesses turning hostile.

Earlier in the day, senior NHRC officials held an hour-long closed door meeting with Police Commissioner Sudhir Sinha.

The team also met District and Sessions Judge J C Upadhyay in the court and examined the 24-page judgment.

P G J Nampoothri, Special Reporter for the Commission in Gujarat, told PTI that the team had no intention of visiting the Best Bakery massacre site located at Hanuman Tekri.
