Pondy CM decides to resignPondicherry Chief Minister R V Janakiraman today submitted his resignation to Lt Governor Dr Rajani Rai. This was in the wake of his government being reduced to a minority, following the withdrawal of support by the Tamil Maanila Congress. Janakiraman, who had a meeting with DMK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi in Madras, drove straight to Raj Nivas in Pondicherry and tendered the resignation of his cabinet. Earlier, Karunanidhi told newsmen after the meeting that he had advised Janakiraman to resign to uphold democracy. "Even in 1973, when the Communist Party of India withdrew support to the then M O H Farook government, we took a similar decision," he pointed out. To a question on whether the opposition parties would be able to form a stable alternative government, Karunanidhi quipped: "Only time will tell". Asked whether he saw any conspiracy against the Janakiraman government, he said, "We have faced many conspiracies in the past". Karunanidhi said the DMK thanked the people of Pondicherry and other coalition partners for extending their support to form a government there. UNI
