The Ashes Test series

Mark WaughEngland resuming over night at 121-4 crumbled to 187 all out in their first innings in a matter of less than 25 overs in The second Ashes Test match at Lord's. Glenn McGrath (5-54), Jason Gillespie (2-56) and Shane Warne (2-16) claimed the last six wickets without much fuss. Australia, in reply was 255-5 at close on the second day, powered by a century from Mark Waugh, the 19th Test hundred of his career. He was involved in a 100 run partnership with his twin brother Steve who made 45.

West Indies tour of Zimbabwe

West Indies tightened their grip in the first Test against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo when they amassed 393-3, with the in form Chris Gayle (175) helping himself to his maiden Test century. All the West Indies batsmen made useful contributions as Zimbabwe bowlers toiled all day. Only Heath Streak (2-95) looked like ever being able to take a wicket

Coca-Cola Cup, Sri Lanka

Nathan AstleIndia's batting blues while chasing targets came to the fore when they lost their second consecutive one-day international while chasing. With the toss playing such a crucial role India were put on the back-foot right away when Ganguly lost the toss. However the Indians did well to restrict the Kiwis to 210, but discovered that chasing even a moderate target was no fun on the slow Premadasa wicket. Only Nathan Astle (117) and VVS Laxman (60) made some runs on a difficult pitch. India lost the match by 84 runs.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has banned the use of mobile phones being used by players during the ongoing triangular series in Sri Lanka. Rumours that six Indian bookies have checked into the team hotel a few days before the teams arrived only served to heighten the security net around the players. All calls made by the players to and from their hotel rooms are being monitored.

New Zealand has said that they will continue with their tour of Sri Lanka despite violence rocking the streets of Colombo. In an incident this week two persons were killed and more than 70 wounded in an area close to the Premadasa Stadium when police attacked troublemakers. The Ministerial Security Division (a division of the police) that is usually reserved for visiting heads of state has provided the players with security through out their tour. In 1986, the New Zealand cricket team pulled out of their tour when a powerful bomb exploded at Colombo's main bus station, killing 111 people. Then in 1992 the Kiwis returned home mid way through the tour after a suicide bomber had killed a Sri Lankan navy commander just outside their hotel.

Miscellaneous :

Detectives of India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) are in London working with the International Cricket Council's Anti-Corruption Unit. The agency is looking into the deals of telecast rights that were signed for the World Cup in 1996, Independence Cup in 1997 and the ICC Knockout Cup in Bangladesh in 1998. The deals were carried out by the then president of the ICC Jagmohan Dalmiya. The television company WorldTel and its chief, Mark Mascarenhas have also been implicated in this case.

Speaking after the reports that appeared in the media as being one of the candidates short-listed to coach the Pakistan cricket team, former South African skipper Kepler Wessels said he would consider the offer if it was routed through the right channels. He however remarked that he would prefer coaching an Australian or South African side, where hardly any coaching was required and all one needed to do was to organise them. Meanwhile, former Pakistan captain Rameez Raja is likely to negotiate with Wessels on behalf of the Pakistan Cricket Board.
