The Ashes Test series
Queen Elizabeth despite a hectic schedule, made it to Lord's, and caught up with the traditional 'BBC Test match special' radio commentary team. The queen normally meets the two teams of all Ashes Tests played at Lords during the tea break and yesterday after that she headed straight to the radio commentary team.
West Indies tour of Zimbabwe
Coca-Cola Cup, Sri Lanka India go into their opening encounter of the Coca-Cola Cup with opener problems. With Sachin Tendulkar practically ruled out of the entire one-day series, it should be a good chance for the youngsters in the side and the rest of the team to prove that Tendulkar is not the be all and end all of Indian cricket. India play New Zealand at Colombo on Friday. Former New Zealand and now Indian coach John Wright said there would be no case for divided loyalties when India take on New Zealand in the first match today. Wright, the thorough professional that he is said he would be trying even harder against the Kiwis because he would be wanting to prove to his bosses back in India that he was doing a good job. It appears that the jinx haunting the Ranagiri Dambulla International Stadium is not likely to go away in a hurry. Sri Lanka's newest venue has been plagued with problems over the leasing rights of the land on which it was built. Now a new threat has come from the contractors who were involved in building the stadium, who claim they have not been paid for their services. When the Sri Lankan Cricket Board heard rumours that the workers were planning to disrupt the matches at Dambulla, they decided to shift the three matches scheduled to be played there to Colombo's R Premadasa Stadium. However all these matches will be day affairs.
Miscellaneous : Despite a two-day long session the Pakistan Cricket Board were unable to come to any conclusion regarding the appointment of a new coach for the senior team. After South African Richard Pybus quit the post at the end of the series in England, Pakistan have been once again forced to go coach hunting. Former South African skipper Keppler Wessels, Surrey's coach Keith Medlycott and Pakistan's former Test cricketer Khalid 'Billy' Ibadullah, now running a coaching academy in New Zealand, are the contenders for the post. Indian have cited their already jam packed international schedule as the reason for pulling out of the three match one -day series to have been played at the Colonial Indoor Stadium in Melbourne and Brisbane. The Australian Cricket Board, however have expressed the hope that India could make the tour at a later date. The Australian cricket team too it seems were not really excited at the prospect of playing the series at that particular time. Incidentally the wives of Steve Waugh, Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne are all expecting babies in September. Netherlands, Namibia and Canada are to feature in a limited overs tournament to be played at Windhoek, Namibia in April next year. The three teams have qualified to participate in the 2003 World Cup after finishing the top three teams in the recently concluded ICC Trophy held at Toronto, Canada. The tournament will be held in preparation of these three teams leading onto the World Cup. Kenya and the A teams from South Africa and Zimbabwe will also be joining the qualifiers in the tournament. Umpires and scorers at a local cricket match were stumped when they had to officiate a Sunday league match in English city of Bradford in which all 22 players had the surname 'Patel'. In the match between Amarmilan and Yorkshire LPS, the Patels of Amarmilan beat Yorkshire by 31 runs. By a strange coincidence the 15 year old scorer of the game was also a Patel (Amit).
Obituary Roy Gilchrist, former West Indies fast bowler died in Jamaica yesterday. He was 67. Gilchrist who has played in 13 Tests from 1957 to 1959 and took 57 wickets (avg. 26.68) had been suffering from the Alzheimer's Disease for a while now.

On a day when rain played the upper hand in most of the proceedings, England after having been put into bat stuttered up to 121-4 in the 40 odd overs that were possible on the first day of the second Test at Lord's. Mike Atherton and Marcus Trescothick began with a 33 run first wicket stand.
The West Indies continued the good form they showed towards the end of the one-dayers in Zimbabwe when they bowled out Zimbabwe for 155 and then scampered to 100-0 at close of play on the first day of the first Test at Bulawayo. Reon King (4-51) and Colin Stuart (3-45) were the chief destroyers for the West Indies. West Indian openers Daren Ganga (44 not out) and Chris Gayle (52 not out) looked to be in fluent touch at close of play.
