Windows NT.
The biggest problem with everybody out here talking about Unix and Linux is they are jealous of Bill. the big J sways emotions more then technical features

Windows NT is no match for Unix based systems. For an in-depth analysis of this fact read http://www.unix-vs-nt.org.
Hotmail.com which has been bought by Microsoft, DOES NOT use NT, but Solaris!! NT could NOT handle the millions of users that Hotmail had.Even a site like http://www.windows95.com uses FreeBSD (sibling of Linux) and Apache and NOT Windows!!
ISPs that go for Windows NT will be VERY foolish. NT simply provides file manipulation and can't provide a telnet session that makes you present ON the server, like a UNIX telnet session does. You can take these words from someone (me) who has setup servers himself.

I don't think I need to point out the technical failings of Microsoft's NT offerings when considered in a price/value comparison with Linux. In many other parts of the world (like the US) companies feel obligated to go with Microsoft NT because that is what's done. In a country that hasn't realized its full economic potential and whose people have a long history of ingenuity, it seems uncouth that ISP's would tie themselves down (and that's what choosing Microsoft solutions seems to entail nowadays) to one platform, when others are cheaper (an important consideration), technically equivalent if not superior, have multiple platform support (as linux does, note that NT does not support as many filesystems as Linux does), and promote an egalitarian, open computing environment. The advantage of NT in terms of applications plentitude does not apply in the ISP world where open protocol support is paramount. Linux allows India's capable computer scientists to have source code control, and kernel 2.2 will have even more technical prowess. I want to finally point out an economic issue. Linux and other Unix offerings are often the choice for ISP's in other parts of the world where uptime and reliability are critical and THE COSTS OF BANDWITH NECESSITATE TIGHT BUDGET CONSIDERATIONS. We don't want India's ISP's to be swallowed up by massive global networks like IBM.net, Earthlink, AOL, and MindSpring as a result of high NT maintenance costs.

Linux is free. Apache is free. Windows will crash without letting you know. It is expensive. We live on Planet Microsoft and so, windows would be a good option. If the ISP wants to keep customers and provide good technical backbone, it will go for Linux! From my understanding, Linux is also a Unix...I don't know why we pit one against the other.

I hate Windows when it comes to writing code especially for distributed applications. In fact some people like its user interface but I find so colourful GUI irritating. I feel Linux and Unix should not be differentiated just becoz Linux runs on PC, for that matter we have solaris for PC's as well. Linux is just another Unix. We just have two categories here, Unix and Windows. And I love to working on Unix.

Linux of course. It has been long time since I worked in India. It is heartening see the groundswell support for Linux in India. I hope we will take the lead in adopting Linux much faster than any other country.

To paraphrase a popular ad: This is your server (web, e-mail, internet, intranet etc.) This is your server on Linux (no crashes, high speed, reliable, scalable)
Any questions?

Linux/Unix is the obvious choice for an ISP of any size,
Total Scaleability, Total Integration, In Australia/US MOST ISP's use Linux/Unix solutions as they are FAR more stable than that of the Microsoft Camp. With the latest releases of linux from say Redhat (RH5.2) Ease of use combines with scaleability, speed, and all tools needed for FREE. Now India is a country where free is good! Why pay money to US corporations. Wasting Indian resources/money on POOR foreign products. Lets use a free Global product, that does not send money back to the USA. It's like buying a Big Mac, Very AMERICAN
I rest my case, Linux Linux Linux
Please email me if you have questions about linux. My father works for Telecom Australia(Telstra) And they run the country's backbone on Linux.

Matt

I use Linux both at home and at work. I find it to be very flexible and reliable.

Linux & Solaris
Solaris and Oracle for building mission critical larger servers. The only OS supporting 64 way SMP currently. The Internet was built on UNIX and open source efforts and will continue to be so. ASP won't scale. Ask Hotmail, they run on Solaris to this day. Linux runs great and provides a great development environment. We have been developing open-source software for 4+yrs on Solaris and Linux.

In my opinion Linux is best. NT is out of question since its just not worth the price. Now Linux is totally free and runs very well on PCs, and its stable and open source. In a country like India, full of software talents, what can be better than this. So in my opinion Linux should win. Its free, stable, runs on cheap machine, and simply the best technology around!!!

Unix <--- Good for scientific computing.....
Linux <---- A cross breed of Unix and Windows NT
Windows NT <---- Well I can nuke u out oh u stupid fellow!
Well to take a pick I will go for Unix (being a scientist myself)...The platform would be Silicon Graphics...why ? You guessed it right coz I have my foe Windows present there are Soft win ! I have worked on various types of Unix (including Linux) and Win NT and for me there is no comparison. Unix (any flavor) is considerably better. Working with NT is a nightmare, it is not anywhere as robust, it has limited multi-user capabilities, working from a remote location is all but impossible, it has no standard scripting language, its user interface cannot be customized very much, requires reboots for the most trivial of changes - I could go on and on. I am sure Windows 2000 (AKA NT 5) will fix a lot of these issues. Microsoft has talented people and I'm sure they'll get it right at some point in time. Right now, however, almost any version of Unix (including the free versions like FreeBSD and Linux) is a better bet than NT.
