Kiwis told to behave

New Zealand's cricket team has been told to behave itself.

Alan Smith, match referee for the ongoing series against South Africa, warned the team collectively following several incidents of verbal altercations during the second day's play in the second Test. Smith however stopped short of issuing an official reprimand, or fines.

The trouble started when South African opener Gary Kirsten got the benefit of a controversial third umpire's decision to the bowling of Simon Doull. Later, when Kirsten fell, Doull had some things to say to the departing batsman -- who for his part stopped in his tracks, and turned round to return fire.

Since that point, the Kiwi players were seen having plenty to say to the South African batsmen.

Smith spoke to New Zealand manager John Graham at the end of the day's play on Friday, about the team's behaviour.

"There were one or two incidents yesterday that concerned me,'' Smith said. "I have spoken with the manager and asked him to remind the players of their responsibilities to the game and I am entirely satisfied that he has conveyed the message.''
