Statistical Highlights 21st match: India v Sri Lanka at Taunton (Somerset) on 26-5-1999

• This match was the 179th in World Cup history.

• This match was India's 401st and Sri Lanka's 301st in LOIs.

• This match was India's 40th and Sri Lanka's 35th in the WC.

• This match was the 60th meeting between the two sides in LOIs and their fifth in the WC.

• The Clerical Medical County Ground at Taunton (Somerset) was hosting its only third LOI match. The Kenya-Zimbabwe WC encounter was played here on 15-5-1999.

• The 318 run partnership between Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid surpassed the following records...

• on 91, they surpassed India's previous best for the 2nd wicket in the WC against Sri Lanka which was the 90 between Sachin Tendulkar and Sanjay Manjrekar at Calcutta in 1996 WC.

• on 99, they surpassed the previous best at this venue which was 98 runs between Englishmen David Gower and Ian Gould for the sixth wicket also against Sri Lanka on 11-6-1983.

• on 131, they surpassed India's best for the second wicket against any country in the WC. The previous best was 130 between the same pair against South Africa at Hove on 15-5-1999.

• on 177, they surpassed the previous best for the 2nd wicket inthe WC which was 176 runs between Englishman Dennis Amiss and Keith Fletcher against India in the first ever WC match at Lord's in 1975.

• on 237, they surpassed India's best for the second wicket in LOIs, obliterating the 236 runs put on by this same pair also against Sri Lanka at Nagpur just two months ago on 22-3-1999.

• on 238, they surpassed the highest ever partnership for any wicket in the WC eclipsing the previous record of an unbeaten 237 runs for the third wicket between Dravid and Tendulkar against Kenya at Bristol just four days ago on 23-5-1999. It also surpassed the highest partnership for any wicket in England.

• on 264, they surpassed the previous best in LOIs for the 2nd wicket which was 263 runs between Pakistani Aamer Sohail and Inzamam ul Haq against New Zealand at Sharjah on 20-4-1994.

• on 276, they surpassed the previous best partnership for any wicket in LOIs, which was the unbeaten 275 between Indians Mohammad Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja for the 4th wicket against Zimbabwe at Cuttack on 9-4-1998.

• on 310, the surpassed the unbeaten 309 put on Tim Curtis and Tom Moody for the 3rd wicket for Worcestershire against Surrey at the Oval 1994 in the NatWest Trophy which was previous highest for any wicket in an important one-day domestic match in England or anywhere in the world.

• Dravid's hundred was the 450th LOI hundred and the 54th in the WC.

• Dravid became the only second batsman in WC history to score back to back hundreds. He had scored an unbeaten 104 against Kenya at Bristol in his last game on 23-5-1999. Australian Mark Waugh had scored two successive hundreds - 130 v Kenya at Visakhapatnam on 23-2-1996 and 126 v India at Mumbai on 27-2-1996 - in the previous WC.

• This was the only second occasion when Dravid kept wickets throughtout an innings. In the match against West Indies at Port of Spain on 26-4-1997, he kept wickets for Mongia, who was injured during the match while batting.

• Rahul Dravid's 145 was now the second highest score made by a wicket-keeper in LOIs. Australia's Adam Gilchrist still holds the record of 154 runs against Sri Lanka at Melbourne on 7-2-1999. However, Dravid's score was now the highest by a keeper in a WC match. The previous highest was by Zimbabwean Dave Houghton against New Zealand at Hyderabad (Ind) in the 1987 WC.

• Ganguly's 183 was the highest by an Indian batsman in both LOIs and WC. The previous highest being Kapil Dev's unbeaten 175 against Zimbabwe at Tunbridge Wells in the 1983 WC.

• It was the only fourth highest individual score in LOI history and the second in WC. Only Gary Kirsten's unbeaten 188 against UAE at Rawalpindi in 1996 exceeds Ganguly's effort in a WC match, while Pakistani Saeed Anwar's 194 against India at Chennai on 21-5-1997 and West Indian Viv Richards' unbeaten 189 against England at Manchester on 31-5-1984 are the bigger scores in LOIs than Ganguly.

• Ganguly's seven sixes in the match equals the maximum scored by any batsman in the WC. West Indian Viv Richards had also hit seven sixes during his innings of 181 against Sri Lanka at Karachi in the 1987 WC. He also equals the maximum hit by an Indian in LOIs. Tendulkar had hit seven during his innings of 100 against Australia at Kanpur on 7-4-1998.

* It was the highest score by an Indian against Sri Lankan in both in a LOI and WC. The previous best was 137 by Tendulkar at Delhi in the 1996 WC.

• India's 373-6 was second highest team total in LOI and WC. Only Sri Lanka's 398-5 against Kenya at Kandy in the 1996 WC on 6-3-1996 exceeds India's effort.

• The total also exceeds the highest made against Sri Lanka which was 371-9 by Pakistan at Nairobi (Gym) on 4-10-1996.

• It was the highest total made in LOI match in England. The previous highest was England's 363-7 against Pakistan at Nottingham on 20-8-1992. This was a 55-over match. Just for the record, the highest total in a domestic one-day match in England remains as 413-4 in 60 overs by Somerset against Devon at Torquay in 1990 in the NatWest Trophy.

• Sanath Jayasuriya by conceding 37 runs in just 3 overs (18 balls) has the most expensive spell of in a WC match. West Indian Wayne Daniel had conceded 35 runs during his three over-spell against Australia at Leeds in the 1983 WC.

• Romesh Kaluwitharana by not conceding any byes during India's large total has created a new LOI record. The previous record was held by Kaluwitharana himself when he did not concede any byes in Pakistan's total of 371-9 at Nairobi on 4-10-1996.

• The partnership of 51 runs between Marvan Atapattu and Aravinda deSilva was Sri Lanka's best against India in a WC match. The previous best was the 34 runs between Asanka Gurusinha and Aravinda at Calcutta in the 1996 WC.

• Robin Singh captured his 50th wicket in his 83rd match when he had Upashanta caught. He becomes the 14th Indian and the 106th bowler in LOI history to achive this milestone.

• Robin now becomes the only fifth Indian "all-rounder" to achieve the double of 1000 runs and 50 wickets. The other Indians to do so are: Kapil Dev (3782 runs + 253 wickets); Ravi Shastri (3108 + 129); Manoj Prabhakar (1858 + 157) and Tendulkar (7971 + 78). Robin at the end of the match has scored 1379 runs and has 51 wickets to his credit.

• Robin Singh's 5-31 was the best figures by an Indian bowler in the WC. The only other Indian who have captured five wickets in a WC match - was Kapil Dev when he captured 5-43 against Australia at Nottingham in 1983.

• It was also the best by an Indian bowler against Sri Lanka in the WC. The previous best was 3-34 by Javagal Srinath at Calcutta in 1996.

• With Robin Singh taking his second five-wicket haul against Sri Lanka (he had taken 5 for 22 at Guwahati on 22-12-1997), he now joins West Indian Otis Gibson and Pakistani Waqar Younis as the only bowlers to record five-wicket hauls againstSri Lanka - on two occasions.

• The 157 run victory was India best in terms of runs in LOIs. The previous best was 118 runs when it beat Australia at Chelmsford on 20-6-1983.

• It was India's first ever victory over Sri Lanka in five matches in the WC.

• This was Ganguly 's 13th Man of the match award in his 103rd match. It was his first in the WC.
