Mohandas Menon

This match was the 1452nd in Limited over international (LOI) history.

This match was the 168th in World Cup history

This match was Australia's 427th and New Zealand's 325th in LOIs.

This match was Australia's 39th and New Zealand's 37th in the WC.

This was the team's first meeting on English soil.

This was the 74th meeting between the two sides in LOIs and their fifth in the WC.

Sophia Gardens at Cardiff (Glamorgan) became the 113th city and 127th ground to host a LOI match. It was England's 19th city/town and 20th international ground.

This was the second ground in Glamorgan and in Wales to host a LOI / WC after Swansea, which has hosted two matches. The last one being during the 1983 WC.

Steve Waugh was appearing in his 25th WC match. It brings him on par with Allan Border - the most for Australia. He also becomes the seventh player to appear in 25 or more WC matches.

The 94 run partnership between Ricky Ponting and Darren Lehmann was Australia's best against New Zealand for the 3rd wicket in the WC. The pair obliterated the previous best of 43 between Mark Waugh and Shane Warne at Chennai in 1996.

The partnership was also the highest for Australia against the Kiwis at a neutral venue. The previous best was 56 runs between Steve Waugh and Tom Moody at Sharjah on 21-4-1998.

Although Michael Bevan has been run-out on only 11 occasions, his run-out of his team-mate (Shane Lee) was the 26th instance where Bevan was involved in a run-out of his partner in LOIs.

Nathan Astle's three catches equals New Zealand's best against Australia by a fieldsman in LOIs. Martin Crowe (twice), Jeremy Coney, Stephen Fleming and Dion Nash were the other Kiwis to take three catches against Australia in LOIs.

Astle also becomes the only seventh fielder and the second Kiwi, after Chris Cairns (v UAE at Faisalabad, 1996) in WC history to take maximum three catches in a match.

Geoff Allott's 4-37 was the second most wickets taken by a New Zealander in a WC match. The most wickets by a Kiwi bowler in a WC match still remains with Richard Hadlee who had figures of 5-25 against Sri Lanka at Bristol in 1983. Just for the record, the previous best by a Kiwi bowler against Australia in the WC was the 3-30 by Gavin Larsen at Auckland in the 1992 edition of the WC.

The 2nd wicket partnership of 16 runs between Astle and McMillan was New Zealand's best against Australia in the WC. The previous best was a paltry 11 runs achieved in the 1987 and 1992 WCs.

Roger Twose (80*) on 1, reached his 1000th run in LOIs in his 38th match. He becomes the 19th New Zealander and 132nd batsman in LOI history to do so. At the end of his innings, he has scored 1079 runs in his career.

The fifth wicket partnership of 148 runs between Twose and Cairns was New Zealand's all-time best in LOIs. The previous best was 147 between the same pair against India at Pune on 24-11-1995. It was also New Zealand's best against Australia. The previous best being the 85 runs between John Morrison and Jeremy Coney at Sydney on 9-2-1983.

The above partnership also betters New Zealand's best for the 5th wicket in the WC. The previous best was 88 runs between Chris Cairns and Adam Parore against Holland at Baroda in the 1996 WC. It also surpasses New Zealand's best against Australia in the WC, which was the 25 runs between Martin Crowe and Dipak Patel at Indore in 1987.

Further, the above partnership was also the best ever for the fifth wicket against Australia in the WC. The previous best was the 87 between Pakistanis Javed Miandad and Asif Iqbal at Nottingham in 1979.

This win was New Zealand's second over Australia in five WC matches.

The Man of the match award was Roger Twose's second in LOIs.
