Statistical Highlights 8th match: India v Zimbabwe at Leicester, 19-5-1999

• This match was the 1450th in Limited over international (LOI) history.

• This match was the 166th in World Cup history

• This match was India's 399th and Zimbabwe's 119th in LOIs.

• This match was India's 38th a Ånd Zimbabwe's 28th in the WC.

• This was the 25th meeting between the two sides in LOIs and their seventh in the WC.

• The County Ground, Grace Road at Leicester (Leicestershire) was hosting its only second LOI match. Curiously enough, the last match played here was during the 1983 World Cup when the same teams met on 11-6-1983. India had won the match by five wickets.

• Paul Strang (18) on 16 reached his 1000th run. He was playing in his 74th match and 61st innings. He becomes the 131st batsman in LOI history and sixth Zimbabwean to do so.

• He also becomes the first Zimbabwean to score 1000 runs and capture more than 50 wickets in LOIs. At the end of the match, Strang has 1002 runs and taken 81 wickets in 74 matches. He is also the 31st all-rounder in LOI history to achieve this milestone.

• The partnership of 42 runs betwe Grant Flower and Murray Goodwin just failed to to surpass Zimbabwe's best for the 3rd wicket in the WC. The pair fell short of existing best of 51 between Dave Houghton and Andy Pycroft against New Zealand at Hyderabad (Ind) in the 1987 WC. The pair however bettered Zimbabwe's best against India for the third wicket in a WC match. The previous record was a paltry 37 between Alistair Campbell and Guy Whittall at Kanpur in the 1996 WC.

• The partnership of 57 runs between the Flower brothers - Grant and Andy was Zimbabwe's best for the 4th wicket against India in the WC. The pair surpassed the previous best of 43 between Kevin Arnott and Houghton at Ahmedabad in the 1987 WC.

• The unbeaten 68 by Andy Flower was the highest at this venue in a LOI. India's Sandeep Patil had scored 50 in the only other match played here in 1983, which incidentally was also against Zimbabwe.

• Nayan Mongia equals the LOI record for the maximum dismissals by a keeper in a match, when he claimed four catches and one stumpings. Mongia infact shares this record with 15 other keepers in LOIs. However, Mongia now becomes the first keeper in LOI history to claim five dismissals in a match on three seperate occasions. Mongia twice before had five dismissals (3ct+2st) in a match - against New Zealand at Auckland on 27-3-1994 and against Pakistan at Toronto on 18-9-1996. The only other keepers to do it on two occasions are South African Dave Richardson and Zimbabwean Andy Flower.

• Incidentally only three other keepers have achieved this feat in a WC match. They being: India's Syed Kirmani against Zimbabwe at this same venue in 1983; West Indian Jimmy Adams against Kenya at Pune in 1996 and Pakistani Rashid Latif against New Zealand at Lahore also in 1996.

• Ajit Agarkar's bowling figures of 9-0-70-1 was the second most expensive bowling in a WC match by an Indian after Karsan Ghavri's 11-1-83-0 against England at Lord's in 1975.

• Zimbabwe's 252-9 was its highest against India in a WC match. The previous best being 235 at Tunbridge Well in the 1983 WC.

• The 51 extras conceded by India was the most by any team in a WC match. The previous highest was 42 when Pakistan conceded against New Zealand at Christchurch in the 1992 WC.

• India now also holds the dubious record of conceding the maximum no-balls (16) by a team in a World Cup match. Australia in the 1983 edition of the WC had conceded 15 in its match against India at Chelmsford.

• Guy Whittall captured his 50th LOI wicket when he claimed the wicket of Mongia. He was playing in his 74th match. He becomes the fourth Zimbabwean and 105th bowler in LOI history to do so. He joins Paul èStrang as the second Zimbabwean and 32nd all-rounder to score 1000 runs and capture 50 wickets in LOIs.

• Henry Olonga's 3-22 was the best figures by a Zimbabwean bowler in WC against India. The previous best was 3-35 by John Traicos at Hamilton in 1992.

• The match extras of 90 was also the maximum conceded in any WC match. India had conceded 51, while Zimbabwe 39 extras. The previous highest was achieved just a few days ago when the Pakistan-West Indies encounter at Bristol on 16-5-1999, produced 73 extras.

• The above extras of 90 also equals the LOI record. In the match between West Indies and Pakistan at Brisbane on 7-1-1989 the same number of extras were conceded.

• The 24 wides conceded by Zimbabwe were the maximum conceded by one team in any WC match. The previous highest being 22 by West Indies against England at Jaipur in 1987 and by Australia against Scotland at Worcester just three days ago!

• This was Zimbabwe's first victory over India in the WC.

• The Man of the match award was Grant Flower's sixth in 94 matches.
He now equs the record of Paul Strang- who also has the maximum number of such awards for Zimbabwe in LOIs.
