Statistical Highlights 39th match: South Africa v Australia at Leeds on 13-6-1999

• This match was the 1481st in Limited over international (LOI) history.

• This match was the 197th in World Cup history.

• This match was South Africa's 172nd and Australia's 433rd in LOIs. Australia equals the tally of Pakistan of having played in most LOI matches.

• This match was South Africa's 23rd and Australia's 45th in the WC. Australia now joins England and Pakistan of having played in maximum WC matches.

• It was their 38th meeting in LOIs and their second in the WC.

• This match was the 24th LOI and the 12th in the WC to be played at this venue. It has now hosted the maximum WC matches than any other grounds in England.

• This venue was hosting its third WC match of the tournament.

• Steve Waugh was appearing in his 31st WC match. Now only Pakistani Javed Miandad has played in more - 33 matches.

• Jonty Rhodes (39) on 3 reached his 1000th run against Australia. It was his 38th match and 35th innings. He becomes the 14th batsman in LOIs to reach this land mark against Australia. Six from West Indies, two each from New Zealand and South Africa, and one each from England, Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan have achieved this feat. Among South Africans only Hansie Cronje has scored more - 1364 runs, while West Indian Desmond Haynes has the maximum run aggregate of 2262 runs. Rhodes now has run aggregate of 1036 runs against Australia.

• Hershelle Gibbs' 101 was the only third hundred for South Africa in the WC. Gary Kirsten (188*) and Andrew Hudson (161) in the 1996 WC were the others to do so. Interestingly all the batsmen were openers.

• It was the only second WC hundred at this venue. Pakistan's Imran Khan had scored an unbeaten 102 against Sri Lanka in the 1983 WC.

• The partnership of 78 between Gibbs and Rhodes just failed to surpass by two runs South Africa's best for the fourth wicket in the WC, which still remains as the 79 runs between Peter Kirsten and Dave Richardson against New Zealand at Auckland in the 1992 WC.

• Shane Warne's catch of Lance Klusener was his 13th against South Africa. Warne has now taken maximum catches against South Africa. India's Mohammad Azharuddin and Sri Lankan Roshan Mahanama have 12 catches to their credit.

• The "run-out" of Mark Waugh was his 25th of his career. Now among Australians only Allan Border has been dismissed on more occasions - 28 times.

• The partnership of 126 between Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh was the best against South Africa by any team for the fourth wicket in the WC. The previous best was the 77 between Pakistanis Aamer Sohail and Salim Malik at Karachi in the 1996 WC.

• The above partnership was also the best for the fourth wicket at this venue. The previous best was the 118 runs between Pakistanis Addur Razzaq and Inzamam ul Haq against Australia during this WC on 23-5-1999.

• The Ponting-Waugh partnership was also the third highest for any wicket against South Africa in the WC. The top two partnerships remain as the 138 between West Indians S Chanderpaul and BC Lara for the 2nd wicket at Karachi in 1996 and 130 between Indians Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid also for the 2nd wicket at Hove during this WC.

• Steve Waugh's unbeaten 120 was the highest by an Australian captain in the WC. It obliterates the previous best of 74 runs by Mark Taylor against Sri Lanka at Lahore in the 1996 WC final.

• It was also his highest score as a captain in 47 matches for Australia. His previous highest was the unbeaten 91 which also came against South Africa at Bloemfontein on 13-4-1997. Incidentally, the Bloemfontein match was his first as a captain.

• It was S Waugh's only second LOI hundred in 266 matches. His only other hundred came against Sri Lanka at Melbourne on 16-1-1996, which was in his 187th match.

• It was the only third hundred by an opposing captain against South Africa. The other two hundreds have come from Indians Ravi Shastri - 109 at Delhi on 14-11-1991 and Sachin Tendulkar - 114 at Mumbai on 14-12-1996.

• He also becomes the only fourth Australian captain to score a hundred in LOIs. The others being: Greg Chappell (on three occasions), Allan Border (2) and Mark Taylor (1).

• It was the highest individual score by an Australian against South Africa which surpasses twin brother Mark Waugh's unbeaten 115 at Port Elizabeth on 31-3-1997.

• It was the highest score by a batsman against South Africa in the WC. The previous highest was the 111 which was achieved on two occasions by Pakistani Aamer Sohail and West Indian Brian Lara both at Karachi in the 1996 WC.

• The partnership of 73 between Steve Waugh and Michael Bevan was the best against South Africa by any team for the fifth wicket in the WC. The previous best was the 67 runs between Sri Lankans Roshan Mahanama and Arjuna Ranatunga at Wellington in the 1991 WC.

• Now only two teams - Australia (now on three occasions) and England (once) have won a LOI match batting second against South Africa while chasing a total of 250-plus. Australia had successfully chased South Africa's 284-7 to score 287-5 at Centurion on 10-4-1997- the highest ever total made against South Africa to win a match.

• Steve Waugh won his 19th Man of the match award of his career. It was the maximum such award won by an Australian in LOIs. Allan Border had won 18 awards. It was S Waugh's third award in the WC.
