Hayden tops world batting rankings
January 26, 2003 15:06 IST
Matthew Hayden has become both the top limited overs batsman and the highest ranked Test player in the world, according to the latest PricewaterhouseCoopers rankings. Hayden moved ahead after the final one-day international before the World Cup on Saturday in which Australia beat England by five runs in Melbourne. He made 69 in the thrilling match.
This puts him simultaneously at number one in the Test and one-day tables, a feat achieved by very few batsmen in the past.
India's Sachin Tendulkar and West Indians Brian Lara and Viv Richards are other members of this exclusive club.
Brett Lee ended the triangular series with England and Sri Lanka at fifth spot in the bowling ratings, his best ODI level yet.
Lee is one of four Australian bowlers in the top 12.
For England, Andrew Caddick returned to the top 10, but batsman Marcus Trescothick dropped out of it, after a poor end to the tournament.
