ICC Board awards points to Kenya

February 20, 2003 18:58 IST

The International Cricket Council Board resolved on Thursday that the World Cup match between Kenya and New Zealand, scheduled for Friday, February 21, will not be rescheduled and the points will be awarded to Kenya.

Following an application by New Zealand Cricket to relocate the match, the Board discussed the matter on telephone.

A statement from the ICC said: NZC's request to move the match to an alternative venue was opposed by the Kenya Cricket Association. The Board rejected NZC's request and, as New Zealand has decided not to travel to Kenya or apply to the Event Technical Committee, the four points have been awarded to Kenya.

ICC Chief Executive Malcolm Speed said: "I am happy that the matter is now resolved and that the ICC Cricket World Cup can move forward.

"At the same time we have already seen some fantastic matches in this tournament and I am disappointed that this match will not be taking place."

The application was heard by the Executive Board as NZC's original advice that it would not play in Kenya was made before the start of the tournament and before the Event Technical Committee came into being, the statement said.

The Executive Board comprises ICC president Malcolm Gray, ICC vice-president Ehsan Mani, the presidents of the 10 Full Members and three representatives of Associate Members.

The Full Members:

Australia - Bob Merriman, Bangladesh - Mohammad Ali Asghar, England - David Morgan, India - Jagmohan Dalmiya, New Zealand - Sir John Anderson, Pakistan - Lt. General Tauqir Zia, Sri Lanka - Hemanka Amarasuriya, South Africa - Percy Sonn, West Indies - Rev Wes Hall, Zimbabwe - Peter Chingoka.

Associate Members:

Kenya - Jimmy Rayan, Malaysia - HRH Tunku Imran, Holland - Rene van Ierschot
