Ace batsman Michael Vaughan has thrown his hat in the ring for England's captaincy should Nasser Hussain decide to step down either soon after the World Cup or subsequently.

Speculation about England's next captain has grown after Hussain said he is disillusioned with the game's authorities and indicated he might resign after the World Cup.

"If at the end of the World Cup or in a year's time the job does become available, I would like my name to be mentioned but for now I'm happy to carry on playing," Vaughan told newspersons as the team's preparation was underway for England's World Cup tie against Namibia on Wednesday.

"I've not heard of many people turning the job down," he stated.

But Vaughan said he would like Hussain to continue to lead the side. "Nasser is doing a great job and we are all behind him and hopefully he will continue."

Vaughan is among a small group of players who have been tipped for the captain's role.

Having lead England A on their tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe in 1998/9, he has long been targeted as a future captain. But the 28-year old, playing in his first World Cup, stated he still had a lot to learn before being considered.

"I'm not very experienced as a captain and there will be a number of players who would like to be mentioned."

"I'm always thinking about the game when I'm on the field but it's pretty hard being an international batsman, fielder and cricketer and that's what I'm concentrating all my efforts on for now."
