Vajpayee has talks with Japanese, Mauritius leaders

India and Japan have resolved to resist global terrorism and cooperate with each other in various economic and other fields.

This was agreed to at a meeting between Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his Japanese counterpart Junichiro Koizumi on Thursday.

There was also a meeting between Vajpayee and the Mauritian Prime Minister, Anerood Jugnauth.

External affairs ministry spokesperson Nirupama Rao said, "One focus of the discussion with the Japanese prime minister is the fact that this year is the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries."

Vajpayee also recalled his visit to Japan in December last year.

The two prime ministers reviewed their ties and there was also a discussion on the ongoing bilateral economic cooperation between India and Japan, including development projects in India with which Japan is associated.

Current projects aided by Japan are metrorail in Delhi and Ganga water pollution project. They expressed satisfaction over the progress of these projects.

The Japanese prime minister was appreciative of the fact that India was hosting the Conference of Parties to the Kyoto Protocol in October. He said this was a very positive and constructive approach adopted by India and signified the very active participation of India in matters relating to multilateral cooperation to safeguard the environment.

During the meeting with the prime minister of Mauritius, Vajpayee pointed out that the two countries share a very rich and diverse relationship.

Mauritius, Rao pointed out, has a very large community of people of Indian origin.

During the meeting of the two prime ministers, there was a discussion about the commemorative events planned in New Delhi in early 2003.
