A security guard attempted to assassinate Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai in Kandahar on Thursday.
He fired at the president's car as it was leaving the mansion of the Governor of Kandahar, Gul Agha Sherzai, witnesses said.
Three persons were killed when Karzai's American bodyguards retaliated.
"I was just outside the gate when I heard the gunshots," Sherzai's security chief Dur Mohammed was quoted as saying. "The Americans opened fire on three people and they were killed."
Meanwhile, in Kabul at least 20 people were feared killed in two blasts in the vicinity of the Ministry of Information and Culture.
