Al Qaeda second-in-command captured: Report

One of those arrested bears a close resemblance to Abu Zubaida, The News daily quoted officials as saying.

"However, sources insisted he was Zubaida," it said.

Zubaida, who coordinated the activities of the Al Qaeda, was injured in the operations by Pakistani and US forces in Faislabad and Lahore, it said.

The operations were temporarily halted after the capture of the Al Qaeda activists, mostly foreigners, as others holding out in other hideouts might have gone underground, the daily said.

The raids were launched after a tip-off from US intelligence agencies, it said.

Fifty persons were arrested on Thursday in the raids while 15 more were picked up on Friday. Two militants who resisted were killed and several, including some Pakistani security personnel, were injured in the raids.

Khalid Maqbool, the governor of Punjab province where the raids took place, is said to have taken the Pakistani intelligence agencies to task for not locating the Al Qaeda hideouts themselves saying it caused embarrassment to the Pakistan government.

Pakistan has consistently denied the existence of any Al Qaeda hideouts in its territory and rejected speculation that some of the militant leaders may have taken refuge there.
