Over the past week, United States and allied forces have killed around 800 Al Qaeda and Taliban fighters in Afghanistan's Shahi Kot valley, Time magazine reported on Monday.
US sources in the region had put the figure at 500.
The battle in the eastern part of the country may be a defining moment in the war and US soldiers have been deployed to handle the brunt of the fighting, the magazine quoted Pentagon officials as saying.
Meanwhile, two tribesmen were found to be in possession of an audiotape, photographs of Osama bin Laden, a letter detailing Al Qaeda operations in Afghanistan and a list of local chieftains who were taking bribes, Time said.
The audiotape has been sent to Bagram airbase for analysis by US forces, it added.
