For Reena Virk's parents, attending the trial of a teenage girl accused of dealing the final blow that killed their daughter was too much of an ordeal.

It is no less an ordeal for the grandparents but they turned up in a Vancouver court on Monday, hoping that the anguish on their faces will help send the accused to a long term in prison.

"This is a last chapter of her life," Reena's grandfather, Mukand Pallan, a former sawmill worker, told reporters. "We want to be here for Reena, especially on the first day."

Reena Virk, 14, was beaten by her classmates and drowned in a 1997 attack that shocked Canada and America. Except for one teenaged boy, the rest of the attackers were teenagers were girls.

While the other girls received lenient sentences, Kelly Ellard, 17, is accused of second-degree murder.

According to the prosecution the first group of six girls beat up Reena and left the scene. They had considered her eccentric, and one of them had accused her of trying to steal her boyfriend.

Reena Virk drowned following two beatings few minutes later, and police have accused Kelly Ellard of inflicting the final blow. Her body was found eight days later in a tidal pool.

Warren Glowatski charged in the second attack was tried as an adult and is serving a life sentence.

Ellard's trial is expected to last 20 days. More than 25 witnesses, including Glowatski, are expected to testify. But Ellard's lawyer plans to question the credibility of Glowatski's testimony.
