Onam
Mahabali was banished because he became too popular on earth. The devas became resentful of him. In response to their plea, Lord Vishnu came down to earth as a small Brahmin boy, Vamana and, by trickery, exiled him. But not before Mahabali secured the privilege to visit his subjects one day in the year. Hence the popularity of this special day when the spirit of Mahabali comes alive.

Vamana requested King Mahabali for three paces of earth. The generous king readily agreed. Vamana showed his true colours and measured the three worlds -- bhoomi or earth, swarghaloka or heaven, and pathalam or the other world in just two paces. And Mahabali had promised three paces. With one pace still to go, Vishnu claimed Mahabali, now bowed in respect. As the legend goes Mahabali was sent to Pathalam. Others believe that Vishnu sent him to Suthalam, a marginally better place.
