Delhi is actually two cities -- Old Delhi and New Delhi. New Delhi is the Lutyens Delhi, that came up post 1911 , when the city was chosen to be the new capital of British India. The new city was beautifully planned and this plan was beautifully executed as well. Glorious sandstone buildings, set in spacious gardens and wide tree-lined avenues are the hallmark of this 20th century city.
Old Delhi by contrast lacks any concept of space or symmetry. Decrepit, tumbled down buildings, built one on top of each other, line the narrow lanes and gullies of the old town. But located in and around Old Delhi are the remains and relics of the six cities that came before New Delhi. Old Delhi is in fact a giant graveyard of these six long-gone cities. Around every street corner, one is likely to bump into a pile of spelndidly carved mildewed stones that once were part of a key monument of some year or the other. It is not surprising, therefore, that to efficiently 'sightsee' Delhi and absorb the real flavour of this mystical city, one should plan an itinerary that includes some of the best monuments -- listed below -- of each era, as well as the city's atmospheric chowks and bazaars: |
