Indian and Pak veterans to do battle

The first match in the veterans one-day cricket series between traditional rivals India and Pakistan will be played in Hyderabad on October 17 under floodlights.

The veterans one-day series is being revived after a lapse of ten years. The last veterans match between the two teams was played in India during 1987-88, just before the Reliance Cup.

Veterans Cricket Association of Hyderabad secretary P R Mansingh told newsmen here last night that all the players had confirmed their participation in the the five one-day match series.

The winner of the series will get a cash prize of Rs 100,000 and the Zandu Balm Independence Cup. The man of the series will become richer by Rs 51,000. For every match, the man of the match will be get Rs 10,000.

Mohinder Amarnath and Zaheer Abbas will lead the Indian and Pakistan teams respectively.

The main draw for the game of course will be former Pakistan skipper Asif Iqbal Rizvi, who was born in this city and played some of his early cricket here before going across the border.

A purse of Rs 51,000 will be presented to Polly Umrigar by the VCAI, before the first game.

Besides this tournament, the Indian veterans are scheduled to tour Holland early in 1998, and host the South African veterans later the same year.
