DEAR REDIFF

Age has not withered these great men...

Anant Gaundalkar

On March 13, Australia's oldest living Test cricketer and the second oldest Test cricketer in the world, Leo O' Brien, died in Sydney at 89 years and 255 days.

How many Test cricketers are still around in spite of being on the wrong side of 85?

There are now exactly 11 cricketers in this age group from six countries -- South Africa, Australia, England, India, West Indies and New Zealand. There are no players from the other three Test-playing nations, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Zimbabwe for the simple reason that they started their Test tenures after World War II.

The distinction of being the world's oldest living Test cricketer goes to the West Indies's L S Birkett who is 92 years and 335 days old as on March 15. There are two Indians in this exclusive club -- M J Gopalan and the legendary Lala Amarnath.
