Sohail to testify on bribery charges
Pakistan Cricket Board chief executive Majid Khan indicated in Lahore on Thursday that star opener Aamir Sohail would be asked to appear before disciplinary committee chairman Talat Ali when the latter returns from the West Indies.
Ali, who is now carrying out the duties of match referee for the ongoing Test and ODI series between the West Indies and Sri Lanka, will on his return summon Sohail and ask him to substantiate his allegations regarding match fixing and betting in Pakistan cricket, Majid Khan indicated at a press conference at the Gaddafi Stadium.
The PCB CEO indicated that Sohail, who had earlier been suspended for two years for acts of indiscipline - this was later revoked after the batsman tendered an apology -- would be considered for selection for the Pakistan team to take part in the Asia Cup quadrangular ODI tournament to be held in Sri Lanka from mid-July. "Sohail has not yet paid the fine of Rs 50,000 imposed on him by the PCB," Khan added.
The PCB's disciplinary board is slated to enquire into Sohail's charges. "Action will be taken against anyone found guilty of either betting or match fixing," Khan indicated. "However, it is up to Sohail to first produce the proof which he has claimed is in his possession."
The Pakistan team for the Asia Cup, meanwhile, is expected to be announced by the middle of next week. Khan indicated that a coach, to replacing Mushtaq Mohammad, would also be named at the time.
The PCB, meanwhile, has sent a proposed itinerary for India's upcoming tour to the Board of Control for Cricket in India. "We will make the schedule public as soon as the BCCI's confirmation is received," Khan said. The Indian team is slated to visit Pakistan for an ODI series in September -- a tour that will signal the revival of direct cricketing links between the two countries.
