Lele succeeds Dalmiya as BCCI secretary

Jayant Y Lele, till the other day joint secretary of the BCCI, has succeeded Jagmohan Dalmiya as general secretary of cricket's governing body in India.

Newly installed ICC president Dalmiya, in keeping with the regulations of that body which holds that the head of the ICC cannot hold any office in any national cricketing body, has for his part resigned his post of BCCI secretary with retrospective effect from June 1. Dalmiya has also resigned as secretary of the Asian Cricket Council, wef June 14.

Lele, in fact, was along with BCCI president Raj Singh Dungarpur, part of the Indian delegation at the ICC meeting in London last week, which unanimously picked Dalmiya for president. And on that occasion, was introduced to the functionaries of the ICC and of the other eight Test playing nations as Dalmiya's successor-in-waiting.

Meanwhile, an official press release indicates that Dalmiya - who, while having resigned from his BCCI post, will continue to carry out his duties till Lele takes over on July 1, will chair the meeting of the national selection committee to pick the team for the Asia Cup, and the following tour of Sri Lanka. The exact date of the selection meeting has not yet been decided, but it is expected to be between June 22 and June 25, and chairing it will be Dalmiya's last formal act as BCCI secretary. The next meeting of the BCCI working committee, slated for July 10, will have Lele in the secretary's chair for the first time.
