Bhupati-Paes take Canadian Open title
The Indian Davis Cup pairing of Mahesh Bhupati and Leander Paes won the $2.05 million Du Maurier Canadian Open tennis championship, defeating the Canadian-American pairing of Sebastian Lareau and Alex O'Brien 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
The tournament is part of the ATP tour's Super IX series. Earlier, in the semifinal, the Indian pair had defeated Trevor Kronemann of the US and David Macpherson of Australia 7-6 (12-10), 7-6 (7-4).
Meanwhile, the department of youth affairs and sports, Government of India, announced a cash award of Rs 200,000 for Bhupati, for winning the French Open mixed doubles title earlier this year. The award will be presented at a special function, later this year, honouring outstanding achievements by Indian sportsmen.
