N Korean Ri sets women's 53 kg world lifting record

North Korea's Olympic silver medallist Ri Song-hui broke the world record in the women's 53 kg weightlifting snatch, lifting 102.5 kg at the Asian Games on Tuesday.

In the first world record to fall in the Busan Games, the 23-year-old Ri surpassed the 100 kg set by China's Yang Xia in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Ri, who took the silver in the previous Asian Games in Bangkok, won the silver medal in Sydney in the 58 kg division.

In the snatch Ri lifted 102.5 kg while in the clean and jerk she lifted 122.5, for a total of 225.0 kg.

Thailand's Polsak Udomporn [S-92.5 C&J-120.0 Total=212.5] bagged the silver while China's Meng Xianjuan [S- 92.5 C&J-120.0 Total=212.5] got the bronze.

On Monday, China's Li Zhuo tied her own world record in snatch and total lift in the 48 kg division, raising a total of 200 kg, 90 in the snatch and 110 in the clean and jerk.

Myanmar's Kay Thi Won matched Li's records, but took the silver because of her higher body weight.
