Hamilton awarded MBE by his Royal fan
March 10, 2009

Lewis HamilltonF1 has a new fan. And a big one at that.

The Queen has been revealed to be a Formula One fan after telling British driver Lewis Hamilton [Images] that she had watched his races.

Hamilton was awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II [Images] on Tuesday for his achievement in becoming the youngest Formula One champion in history.

The 24-year-old world champion, who became the youngest ever winner of the prestigious title in November, described collecting his MBE from the Queen as "one of the most overwhelming experiences" of his life.

"I was so nervous to meet her. It was one of the most overwhelming experiences I've ever had. I'm kind of lost for words," he was quoted as saying by Telegraph.

"I don't think you realise until you're standing in front of her how special it is."

He added of his win in Brazil [Images]: "The Queen said she watched very closely the last few laps. She was asking about the car."
