Mauritian player Marinne Giraud upset top seed and local favourite Rushmi Chakravarthi 7-6(1), 6-2 to clinch the singles title of the USD 10,000 ITF Women's Circuit Tennis tournament in Mumbai on Saturday.
Sustaining her fine form, fourth seed Marinne, though not at her clinical best, displayed enough quality to quell the challenge of Rushmi in the contest that lasted an hour and 40 minutes.
Marinne had earlier teamed up with Isha Lakhani to clinch the doubles title by getting the better of Bhambri sisters, Ankita and Sanaa, 6-4, 6-1 at the MSLTA hard courts.
The singles crown was also the second successive one for the talented 21-year-old who had lifted the ITF singles title at Thiruvananthapuram last week.
"I don't think it was my best match but still I played solid and consistent tennis. I didn't have much energy so I had to fight for each point," she said after the match.
"The way I won the first set in the tie-breaker helped me to come through the second set quite comfortably. It was a tight opening set," Marinne said.
Marinne pocketed USD 1568 along with six valuable WTA points.
Despite looking good with her stroke selection in the keenly fought opening set, Rushmi had to be contented with USD 980 and four WTA points.
