Len Aiyappa scored twice to steer Bangalore Lions to a 2-1 victory over Maratha Warriors in a lively match in the Premier Hockey League in Chennai on Friday night.

In the most interesting match of the tournament -- which went into 'Silver goal time', a new concept introduced in this tournament -- Aiyappa scored from a penalty-corner in the sixth minute, to earn his team victory.

As per the concept, the teams play seven-and-a-half minutes and whoever takes the lead during that time is be declared the winner.

Warriors won the hearts of many with their dazzling display and ball possession. But the constant raids and brilliant moves failed to produce another goal which they duly deserved.

The Lions took the lead in the 14th minute when Aiyappa's powerful penalty-corner flick left Warriors goalkeeper Adrian D'Souza stranded.

Warriors equalised in the 26th minute through a stunning shot by Gurbaj Singh after Shivendra Singh's attempt hit the post and rebounded.

The half-time score was 1-1.

The second half of regulation time was dominated by Maratha Warriors, who invaded the rival area time and again. To its credit the Bangalore Lions defence stood firm, blocking all moves.

Both teams entertained the crowd with some dazzling stick-work and brilliant runs.

Earlier Sher-E-Jalandhar prevailed over Chandigarh Dynamos 1-0, through a goal by Jarnil Singh in the 44th minute.
