India edge past China in opener

India made a successful start to their campaign as they got the better of China in their opening match in the BSNL Asia Cup hockey tournament in Chennai on Thursday.

India 1 China 0
Malaysia 8 Singapore 0
Bangladesh 13 Thailand 0
Korea 12 Lanka 2
Pakistan 6 Hong Kong 1

Dilip Tirkey converted the team's seventh penalty corner to give India a 1-0 win over the Asian Games silver medallists to pocket the full three points.

The Pool B encounter was the only game that did not produce a goal feast on the opening day of the tournament.

India and China were locked at 0-0 at half-time.

Three-time champions Pakistan defeated Hong Kong 6-1 in their opening Pool A match.

Pakistan led 3-0 at half time.

Shakeel Abbasi and Muhammad Imran scored a brace each while Imran Khan and Ishanullah were the other scorers for the winners.

Arif Ali scored the lone goal for Hong Kong.
