Hockey Olympian Jaman Lal Sharma died at a local hospital in Lucknow on Sunday, sources said.
Sharma, 84, was admitted to the hospital on Saturday night after suffering a brain hemorrahage.
Sharma was a defender of repute and was part of the silver winning Indian hockey team in the Rome Olympics [Images] in 1960 and was also the coach of the country's hockey team on many occasions.
He also held the post of Director - Sports in the state and was actively involved in promoting hockey by training youngsters.
For his contribution for the game, Sharma was awarded the Padma Shri award.
A number of sports organisations condoled the death of Sharma.
