Harveen Srao beat Athens Olympics [Images] champion Kostevych Olena of Ukraine to earn India its first gold medal in the women's air pistol event at the World Universiade at Bangkok on Friday.
The 22-year-old Punjab shooter scored 486.1 (388+98.1) to claim top honours and also create a new Games' record in the process.
Olena, who was the gold medal winner at the Athens Games in 2004, fired 483.3 (384+99.3), two points short of the Indian's total, and had to settle for silver.
Mozgalova Kira of Russia [Images] claimed the bronze medal with a score of 481.8 (384+97.8).
Harveen, Shweta Chaudhry (383) and Lakhveer (372) helped India win the bronze in the team event after the trio aggregated 1143 points.
They placed behind Ukraine, who topped the table with 1153 points, and Korea, who finished second with 1151.
