Ganguly wins ONGC Cup

National Champion Surya Shekhar Ganguly won the ONGC [Get Quote] Cup International Open chess tournament after settling for a quick draw with Grandmaster Pavel Kotsur of Kazakhstan in the 10th and final round at Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad on Saturday.

The winner was decided by Busholdz system after the Indian Oil [Get Quote] player finished with eight points along with five others -- Deepan Chakravarthy, Arun Prakash, Pavel Kotsur (Kaz), B P Singh and Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh and shared the prize money of Rs 1.1 lakh each.

International Master Deepan Chakravarthy emerged runners up after he agreed for a quick draw with GM Pravin Thipsay.

On the other boards, D P Singh who defeated GM Alexander Fominyh of Russia [Images] in his last effort logged eight points to finish overall sixth.

GM Ziaur Rahman scored a lucky victory over compatriot Abdullah Al Rakib and joined the 8-pointers club while Asian Junior champion S Arun Prasad defeated Grandmaster Reefat Bin Sattar of Bangladesh.
