Organisers of the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games said on Monday they would have to build many new venues, including swimming and athletics complexes, raising concerns of huge cost overruns.

"The major issue is the athletics stadium, whether to make a new stadium or renovate the present one," organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi said. "We are open to anything."

The organisers, who met on Monday to discuss a draft report on infrastructure prepared by an Australian company, said they also favoured new indoor halls for wrestling, weightlifting, netball, badminton, squash besides a new media centre.

Around 8,000 athletes and officials are expected to take part in the New Delhi games, which will feature around 20 sports.

Kalmadi said the cost estimates would be known only after the venue plans were finalised on Nov. 21.

The Australian experts had rejected the acquatic complex and recommended major renovation of the track and field venue, both built for the 1982 Asian Games.

The Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, the showpiece venue for the 1982 games, may eventually stage only the opening and closing ceremonies.

The next games will be held in Melbourne, Australia in March.
