Unseeded Karan Rastogi [Images] and wild card Vishal Uppal caused major upsets to enter the second round of the US $15,000 MSLTA-ITF Futures tournament in Mumbai on Tuesday.
However, the top three seeds David Sherwood of Britain, Simon Greul of Germany [Images] and Prakash Amritraj made smooth progress.
Also advancing were fifth seed Harsh Mankad and sixth seed Sunil Kumar Sipaeya, both recording easy wins.
While local lad Rastogi shocked fourth seed Norikazu Sugiyama of Japan [Images] 7-6 (7/3), 6-1 in one hour and 50 minutes, Delhi-based Uppal rallied superbly after dropping the first set on a tie-break to pip eighth seed Valtzer Dekel of Israel 6-7 (6/8), 6-3, 6-3 after battling for two hours and 16 minutes.
Top seed Sherwood crushed qualifier Sanam K Singh in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 in just 55 minutes while Greul moved up without much effort when unseeded Vijay Kannan conceded the match when trailing 0-5 after suffering an upset stomach and high temperature.
Hard-serving Prakash, son of Indian legend Vijay Amritraj, was too good for unseeded Kamran Rozbeh of Iran, winning 6-0, 6-1 while Mankad was equally merciless while sidelining French qualifier Mark Sibilla 6-2, 6-2.
Delhi-based Sipaeya defeated unseeded Israeli Dori Saddnvik 6-0, 6-4 in an hour and ten minutes.
The day also saw another upset when unseeded Ashkan Shokoofi of Iran ousted seventh seed Andrei Stoliarov of Russia [Images], winning 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 in one hour and 58 minutes to move into the second round.
