Yakubu guides Churchill to victory
February 16, 2005 23:09 IST
Yusif Yakubu's brace guided Churchill Brothers to their first win when they came from behind to beat Vasco FC 2-1 in the eighth round of the National Football League in Margao on Wednesday.
Brazilian Sydney Rodrigues gave Vasco the lead in the ninth minute off a penalty after defender Usman Hussein bought down Aseem from behind inside the box.
Churchill retaliated and equalised through Yakubu also off a penalty in the 24th minute.
The penalty was awarded by referee N Mohan after Sushant Mathew bought down Marcos Pereira inside the box.
Yakubu who, took the spot kick, made no mistake as he beat keeper Virender Singh to his left.
Churchill suffered a major jolt in the 34th minute when their 'keeper Marc Mascarenhas needlessly charged out and fouled Anthony Pereira.
Referee Mohan after consulting with the assistant referee gave Marc the marching orders to reduce Churchill to ten men.
Substitute 'keeper Regan Alemao, who came in place of Roque Baretto, did well to hold the slate clean as he charged out to put the ball out of danger off an Anthony Pereira lob.
Yakubu, who was declared the man of the match, then finished a good move as he collected a through pass from Marcos Pereira and found the far corner of the net to give Churchill their first victory.
