Montgomery hearing set for June

November 16, 2004 18:48 IST

World 100 metres record holder Tim Montgomery will have his appeal against a possible life ban for doping heard in San Francisco in the week beginning June 6.

Montgomery and former Olympic 4x100 metres gold medallist Chryste Gaines have appealed to the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after they were charged with serious doping violations by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).

CAS secretary general Matthieu Reeb told Reuters on Tuesday that Montgomery's hearing would start in San Francisco on June 6 while Gaines's appeal was scheduled for the week of July 10 in New York.

The two cases were originally scheduled to start in San Francisco on November 1 but were postponed at the request of USADA and the athletes' attorneys.

"The parties under-estimated the time needed to collect all the facts," Reeb said.

The charges against Montgomery, the partner of 2000 Sydney Olympics triple gold medallist Marion Jones, and Gaines follow a federal investigation into the BALCO laboratory in California.

As a result of the investigation Kelli White, winner of the women's 100 and 200 world titles in Paris last year, and twice Olympic 4x400 men's relay gold medallist Alvin Harrison have been banned for two and four years respectively.

Both admitted taking a variety of drugs, including the previously undetectable steroid THG (tetrahydrogestrinone).
