The sixth seeds failed to put up any solid resistance and lost the second round match 5-7, 5-7.

The loss came as a big blow for Paes, who along with partner David Rikl had also lost in the second round of the men's doubles earlier.

Navratilova, who made her singles comeback in the tournament, lost to Gisela Dulko of Argentina in the first round. Her only hope now rests in the women's doubles, where she and compatriot Lisa Raymond moved into the fourth round with a 6-2, 6-3 win over the Australians Bryanne Stewart and Samantha Stosur.

Meanwhile, top seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi of Belarus continued their good showing in the tournament with a comfortable 6-3, 6-4 victory over Karsten Braasch of Germany and Sargis Sargsian of Armeniato to move into the men's doubles semi-finals.
