Haywards looking to finish sixth
May 11, 2004 17:15 IST
Haywards 2000 Sporting, who play their last encounter on Wednesday against already-crowned champions East Bengal, are looking to garner full points to finish sixth in the eighth National Football League, at the Nehru stadium, in Margao, Goa.
For Haywards, at eighth place, with 27 points from 21 matches, a win tomorrow will also fetch them Rs 300,000.
East Bengal, with 46 points from 21 matches, have already pocketed the title and the top prize of Rs four million [40 lakh].
With the title in their bag, East Bengal will be resting their key players who are nursing injuries so that they recover fully ahead of their AFC Cup match this month against Malaysian side Negeri Sembilan of Malaysia in the away match, according to coach Subhas Bhowmick, who said they would give the reserve players a chance to play.
Although Douglas D'Silva, Suley Musah, Alvito D'cunha and Mike Okoro (red card) will not be playing on Wednesday, the return of Baichung Bhutia after serving two-match suspension will bolster East Bengal's upfront along with Brazilian Cristiano Junior.
Haywards will bank on their two foreigners, Dudu Omagbemi and Abdulateef Seriki, for success.
