Holmes is BBC Sports Person of the Year
December 13, 2004 10:49 IST
Double Olympic gold medallist Kelly Holmes was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year on Sunday.
Holmes had been the hottest favourite ever to win the award after her exploits in Athens where victories in the 800 and 1,500 metres made her a national heroine back home in Britain.
"After 20 years of dreaming, I finally got my award not once but twice," an emotional Holmes said after receiving her award from former Olympic champion Sebastian Coe.
The overseas title went to Swiss Roger Federer, who won three Grand Slam titles in 2004 including a second Wimbledon title.
The award for the best team went to Britain's rowing men's coxless four, whose triumph in Athens handed Matthew Pinsent his fourth Olympic gold medal.
Other awards:
Young Personality of the Year: Andrew Murray (tennis)
Lifetime Achievement Award: Ian Botham (cricket)
Coach of the Year: Arsene Wenger (soccer, Arsenal manager)
