Vijender goes down fighting

August 16, 2004 00:18 IST

India's light-welterweight (64 kg) Vijender Kumar lost on points to Mustafa Karagollu of Turkey in the first round of the Olympic Games boxing competition in Athens on Sunday.

The Indian pugilist, trailing his rival in the first three rounds, pulled up his socks in the fourth and final round but eventually lost the bout 20-25 at the Peristeri Olympic Boxing Hall.

Vijender conceded a 4-6 lead after the first round which widened to 9-14 in the second and then 13-21 in the third before he went on an all out attack in the final round in which he had the clear edge.

Vijender's exit, following the elimination of Jitender Kumar in the 81 kg class on Saturday, has whittled down the Indian challenge in the ring to two, Akhil Kumar in the 51 kg (fly weight) and Diwakar Prasad in the 54 kg (bantam).
